According to "Colonial and Revolutionary Families
of Pennsylvania," George Anshutz Sr. was the pioneer of the iron
industry in the Pittsburgh district. He built, owned and operated the
first furnace in that now world famed section. This George is also
found mentioned in "Pittsburgh, The Story of an America City," with a
sketch of the small furnace built in 1793 on Two Mile Run (now
Shadyside) which produced mainly casting of stoves and grates. It is
also mentioned that his first order of business was to produce cannon
balls for General Anthony Wayne's army. Unfortunately, due to the lack
of iron ore and timber nearby to keep the furnace running, it closed
with in two years.

According to Henri Eisenbeis, George Ludwig Anschuetz and
all his family moved to the USA, landing in Philadelphia 12/9/1791.
Besides wife and children, George also brought his half-brother
Phillipp and his cousin Maria Barbara, the daughter of Johann Ludwig
and Johann Jakob Guenther. They changed the name to Anshutz.
After George was too old to carry on the business, it was sold to a man
in Pittsburgh named Shoeberger. They bought a fine residence
overlooking the steam-boat landing below Market Street.

The
building
of
Huntingdon
Furnace was the beginning of the most
important era in the industrial history of Franklin township. In 1792,
George Anshutz, a native of Alsace, France, erected the first
blast-furnace in the neighborhood of Pittsburgh, which was abandoned
after two years' operation, on account of the mistake made in locating
it there, being too remote from the ore-mines. Returning to the East,
Mr. Anshutz had his attention directed to the rich ore-fields of
Franklin, and was not slow to see that water-power, wood for charcoal,
and all the elements for carrying on a successful business were close
at hand. He at once conceived the idea that there a blast-furnace could
be easily maintained which might be made the nucleus of an immense iron
trade. Filled with this idea he succeeded in enlisting in his
enterprise Mordecai Massey, afterwards, Judge John Gloninger, of
Lebanon, and Martin Dobbs, of Philadelphia, who formed themselves into
the firm of John Gloninger & Co., for the purpose of establishing

George Ludwig Anshutz and his brother, Johann Philip,
came to America on the ship, "Fair America," which sailed from
Amsterdam and arrived in Philadelphia on 12 Sep 1791. In partnership
with Baron de Beclin and William Amberson, he built the first iron
furnace in Pittsburgh. The blast furnace on Two Mile Run (presently
Shadyside), produced cannon balls for General Anthony Wayne's army as
well as castings of stoves and grates. But there was not enough timber
nearby and the price of iron ore, which had to be brought over the
mountains, was prohibitive. The firm was dissolved in 1794 (although
the furnace was taxed for 1795.) George then bacame the manager of the
Westmoreland Furnace near Laughlintown. He built the furnace for the
Lobinger family. In 1796 he moved to Huntingdon county where he entered
into a four-way partnership to build the Huntingdon Furnace. He was
naturalized in Huntingdon county on 24 Aug 1802, listed as a former
subject of the King of France (Alsace).
After 35 years as manager and part owner of several furnaces and forges
in the Huntingdon district, he retired to Pittsburgh. His wife,
Catherine, died at age 78. He died at age 85. Both were buried in the
German Evangelical Cemetery in Pittsburgh. Their remains were later
moved to the Rahm lot in the Allegheny Cemetery in Pittsburgh.
Research: See EF 147 for picture of the Two Mile Run furnace.
He married Catherina Elizabeth (Sotler?) Gerber, 11 Apr 1780 in
Neiderbronn, Alsace. Born 22 Jun 1737 in Niederbronn, Alsace. Died 14
Dec 1835 in Pittsburgh,
Pennsylvania.
Jeanne Struve gives Catherine's birth date as 22 Jan 1757.

* Johann GEORGE Anshutz Jr. Born 1 Mar 1781 in "In the Jagerthall",
Zuigweiler, Alsace. Christen 4 Mar 1781 in Evangelical Church,
Niederbronn, Alsace. Died 26 Jul 1852 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
Buried in Allegheney Cem., Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
A record left by George Ludwig Anshutz indicates that his eldest son,
Johann George was born "In the Jagershall" (Hunting Valley), which is
the valley where the three iron furnace villages of the Anshutz family
were located. Einsweiler is one of these. An original baptismal
certificate, or blessing, shows he was baptised in the Evangelical
Church of Neiderbronn. Although his headstone lists his birthplace as
Einsweiler, Germany, all of the places mentioned above are in Alsace,
then part of France.
The Anshutz family were reputed to be the first to bring a piano over
the Alleghenies. George appears in a newspaper advertisement in
Pittsburgh on August 1, 1795, as manager of the Westmoreland Furnace,
and offering stoves and castings for sale. This same furnace was used
to cast grape and canaster shot for the War of 1812. Letters written by
George Anshutz, Jr., his wife Martha, and their children to their
relatives in Huntingdon, are in the Dreer Collection of the
Pennsylvania Historical Society in Philadelphia.

* Date given for Cathryne on some list and for
William on others.
William was a member of the Pioneer's Association. His obituary
(necrologie) in the Elkhart Review states he was born in Maryland,
taken to Johnston PA as a babe and then 8 years leter to Ohio. After one
year, the family moved to a farm at Dunlaps, just south of Elkhart in
1867. He worked as a carpenter for the Lake Shore Railroad 24 years. He
leaves wife Rachel and Children, CharlesE. , Albert A. and Sadie. Mrs
Dr. Shafer was a sister.
William was buried from the old Evangelical United Bretheren
Watchtower, which today is First United Methodist Church. They still
have records from the Watchtower Church but they're usually membership
and baptism records only. The column headings are all in old German
script, since it was a German speaking church in the mid 1800s. At
least some of Karl and Anna's children were apparently Methodist.

Adams--Anshutz
Stephen Jarvis Adams is a descendant of the Revolutionary soldier,
Lieutenant Aaron Thorp, of Connecticut. Aaron Thorp was born June 12,
1746, died in 1819. He enlisted September 1, 1777, for the period of
the war, in Captain Mill's company, Second Regiment, Connecticut line,
and was later transferred to Captain Parson's company. Previous to this
we find the following record: "Aaron Thorp, Sergeant, arrived in camp
August, 1776; discharged September 10, 1776; in Captain Hickock's
Company, Twenty-third Regiment militia". In October, 1779: "This
Assembly do establish Aaron Thorp to be Lieutenant of the Second
Company or train band in the Thirteenth Regiment of the (Connecticut)
State troop". Aaron Thorp married Mary Curtis and had issue.
Stephen Jarvis Adams, son of Calvin and Cynthia (Gifford) Adams, was born at Oak Hill, Greene county, New York, April 21, 1837. He was one year old when his parents removed to Wheeling, West Virginia, and still but a child when they located in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, where he received his education in the public schools. On attaining manhood he was associated with his father in the manufacture of iron specialties, and he remained with him until 1870, when he established the firm of S. Jarvis Adams & Company for the manufacture of a similar line of iron goods. His training qualified him to successfully conduct this industry. The plant grew, developed and prospered, becoming one of Pittsburgh's great industrial enterprises. He inherited the inventive genius of his father and used it freely in inventing and perfecting machinery used in his own plant and in kindred industries. His inventions were numerous and contributed greatly to the development of his business, while many of them have come into general use. He is an active member of Calvary Episcopal Church, which he served as vestryman for several years. For twenty-one years he was superintendent of the Sunday school, a line of work that always specially appealed to him. He is on the executive board of the Homeopathic Hospital and the board of managers of Allegheny Cemetery. His fraternal affiliations are with the Masonic order in both the Ancient York and Scottish Rite. In the former he is a Knight Templar and in the latter he has attained the thirty-second degree. His ancestry entitles him to membership in the Mayflower Society and Sons of the American Revolution, and with both of these societies he is connected. He married, November 17, 1862, Emma Virginia Anshutz , born February 10, 1843 (see Holmes). Children: 1. Ida Janette, married John Lake Garner and has Emma Virginia, Janette Adams and John Lake Garner Jr. 2. Calvin Jarvis. 3. Alfred Holmes. 4. Marcellin Cote, married Ida E. Bright and has one daughter, Emma Virginia. 5. Stephen Jarvis (2).

THE CHARCOAL IRON FURNACE AT SHADY SIDE STATION IN PITTSBURGH' MARCELLIN C. ADAMS
PAGE: 103
It is probable that some members of the family were already in America, although of this there is no verification. There is, however, a record of an earlier Anshutz furnace, making iron from bog ore, in New Jersey, near the present Cape May. In the 1780's, iron ore was discovered in western Pennsylvania, and this seemed to have an effect somewhat similar to the discovery of gold in California in 1849. There seems to have been a sort of "iron rush" to western Pennsylvania, for in the ten years or so following, many small furnaces were established in this district. Whether George Anshutz came from Alsace with the deliberate purpose of coming to Pittsburgh or whether he made his decision after his arrival in Philadelphia is not known
Practically nothing is known as to where George Anshutz spent his time between 1791, when he arrived in Philadelphia, and 1793,, the year in which, probably, the furnace was built in Pittsburgh, No doubt a good part of that time was spent in Pittsburgh in preparation for the building, of the furnace. He may even have visited other furnaces, including the Jacob's Creek Furnace, for he was facing conditions very different from the well-established iron furnace practice in Alsace. Also, although he spoke both French and German, he had the additional handicap of having to use a new language.
PAGE: 107
The following account from the Pittsburgh Commercial Gazette of July 29, 1886, gives further information about this early furnace and its founder:
Tradition locates the first Pittsburgh iron-works on the banks of the little stream known as Two Mile run, near Shadyside station. Here, on the spot now marked by a crooked sycamore tree near a little bridge that crosses the run to the grounds of Mr. M. K. Moorhead, a blast furnace was built some time between 1792 and 1794, by Mr. George Anschutz, an Alsatian, who after some experience as a furnace manager near Strassburg, came to this country in 1789 when about 36 years of age. He first engaged in iron-making in New Jersey, but some time in 1792 or early in 1793 crossed the mountains to Pittsburgh and built the Shadyside furnace.
MARCELLIN WAS THE 2nd GREAT-GRANDSON OF GEORGE LUDWIG ANSHUTZ, SR. HE DID EXTENSIVE
GENEALOGICAL WORK ON THE FAMILY IN THE 1930s & HIS WORK IS CONSIDERED AS A BASELINE
BY MOST CURRENT RESEARCHERS. APPARENTLY A LOT OF HIS WORK WAS PERFORMED DURING THE MANY YEARS HE WAS ASSOCIATED WITH THE HISTORICAL SOCIETY OF WESTERN PENNSYLVANIA.
I HAVE SEEN A FEW OTHER REFERENCES TO ANSHUTZs IN NEW JERSEY, BUT DID NOT RECORD WHERE.
APPARENTLY THE IRON INDUSTRY WAS WELL ESTABLISHED IN NEW JERSEY IN THE LATE 1700s.
I WAS SCANNING NEWSPAPER EXTRACTS OF ITEMS RELATED TO NEW JERSEY ON NJGenWeb ARCHIVES
IN 1775 I COUNTED ABOUT 12-15 IRON FURNACES EITHER "TO BE SOLD" OR "TO BE LEASED".

Emma Virginia Anshutz, daughter of Alfred
P. and Eliza Jane (Holmes) Anshutz , was born February 10, 1843, at
Pittsburgh. She has all her life been an active worker in the church,
and through the varied organized charitable organizations. She is a
member of Calvary Protestant Episcopal Church, vicepresident of the
Ladies' Aid Association of the Homeopathic Hospital, vicepresident and
treasurer of the Free Kindergarten Association, and vice-president of
the Society for the Improvement of the Poor. She is on the board of
management of the Home for Aged Couples, the Home for Epileptics, and a
member of the Pittsburgh Art Society. She is a member of the Daughters
of the American Revolution, and treasurer of the Block House
Association, of the Pittsburgh Society of that order that preserved for
posterity the historic "Block House" at the "Point" as well as
numberless other deeds of patriotism. She married, November 17, 1862,
Stephen Jarvis Adams, of Pittsburgh (see Adams). Children: Ida Janette,
Calvin Jarvis, Alfred Holmes, Marcellin Cote and Stephen Jarvis (2).
Emma V. Anshutz (Mrs. Adams) is a descendant in the fourth generation
from Obadiah Holmes, her Revolutionary ancestor, who was a scout and
Indian fighter. Obadiah Holmes, son of Obadiah Holmes, the western
pioneer and first of his name to come to the Alleghanies, served in the
militia and acted as a scout between Fort Pitt and Wheeling, Virginia.
He was with the Colonel Crawford expedition in 1782 that resulted so
disastrously and cost Colonel Crawford his life. He received a grant of
land from the government for his Revolutionary service. He married Jane
Richardson.

Calvin Adams, youngest son of Thomas and Anna
(Thorp) Adams, was born at Oak Hill, June 26, 1809, died in
Pittsburgh, April 11, 1879. He located in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania,
that he might have the advantages that city offered as a coal and iron
center. He started the first malleable iron business west of the
Allegheny Mountains, which in after years became so well known as The
Pittsburgh Novelty Works, which was always a prosperous and paying
business. Mr. Adams had the genius of an inventor coupled with the
business qualifications of a manufacturer, and could not fail to
succeed. Some of his inventions came into general use, among them a
coffee mill, and the Janus faced lock. In 1872 he sold out and retired
from the manufacturing world. He was a director in many of the
companies and financial institutions of Pittsburgh. He was vestryman of
Trinity Episcopal Church, chairman of the building committee, and for
many years a worker in the Sunday school, the welfare of the young
being an especial concern with him. He was a director of the Dollar
Savings Bank, and for many years was a member of the select and common
councils of Pittsburgh. He was one of the board of managers of the
House of Refuge and of Dixmont Hospital, and an inspector of the
Western Penitentiary. He did his full duty as a "soldier of the common
good", conscientiously performing all the duties of citizenship and
proving a worthy son of his distinguished sires. His political faith
was intensely Republican. He married Cynthia Gifford in 1836. Children:
Stephen Jarvis, see forward, Elmira, Annetta, William Calvin, Harriet
Gifford and Janette.

England and settled in Boston in 1632-33, and was founder of the town
of Braintree, Massachusetts. He was the founder of the great Adams
family that has furnished the nation with two presidents and so many
noted public men. Thomas Adams was born in Barnstable, Massachusetts,
August 18, 1766, died at Oak Hill, Greene county, New York, October 5,
1844. Thomas and Anna (Thorp) Adams were the parents of Norman, Mary
Ann, Ansel, Janette, Calvin, see forward, and Minerva.

Coming down in direct line from the earliest Colonial days in our
country and pioneer days in western Pennsylvania, there is the family
under consideration. It has a record of public service not compared by
any. They are on record in every department of our nation's
development. The early history of the Adams family is well known. The
names of John Adams and John Quincy Adams are family words everywhere
American history is read. They form the only instance where son
succeeds father in the high office of president of the United States.
In art, science, literature, religion, business and public service they
everywhere are prominent. The other lines, Holmes and Anshutz, are
equally famed in Pennsylvania annals. The pioneer iron maker of
Pittsburgh was an Anshutz , and the Revolutionary records record the
name of Holmes and Thorp. The development of the great Pittsburgh
industries has been hastened by the energy of these allied families.
The following lines will show the descent of the children of Stephen
Jarvis Adams and his wife, Emma Virginia Anshutz , from their
Revolutionary forbears, maternal and paternal, Obadiah Holmes, of
Pennsylvania, and Lieutenant Aaron Thorp, of Connecticut.

Anshutz, and grandson of George Anshutz
, the pioneer of the iron industry in the Pittsburgh district.
He built, owned and operated the first furnace in that now world-famed
section. Alfred P. and Eliza Jane (Holmes) Anshutz were the parents of
six children: Theodore, Emma Virginia, see forward, Margaretta L.,
Sarah Jane, Anna Eva and Edward Steele.

Die Bachs sind die einzige überlebende Familie
in Mittelbexbach.
stammt, in Altstadt erwähnt. Martin Bach, der 1613 der
reichste Bauer in Mittelbexbach war, - er besaàŸ 6 Pferde -,
hatte von dem verstorbenen Drentz Wagner das Haus gekauft und hatte
seinen Tochtermann Nickel Pissporten darinnen wohnen. Von ihm sind 3
Kinder bekannt.

mari Nickel Pissporten. De lui sont connus 3 enfants.
________________________________________
The Bachs were the only surviving family in Mittelbexbach. The first
inhabitants left around in 1655 this village. Presumably, troops of the
duke of Lorraine prowling in the region have it, one more, destroyed.
Until 1683 Mittelbexbach remained uninhabited. Then, it's reported
that, between 1683 and 1685, nine Catholic families lived it.
Mathises in the Thal and his brother-in-law Hans Bach to Oberbexbach
are mentioned, in a parochial register, written about 1570. In 1613, in
Altstadt, Martin Bach is mentioned as the living the richest peasant
living in Mittelbexbach -he possessed 6 horses - had bought the house
of the defunct Drentz Wagner, house in which lived in his daughter and
her husband Nickel Pissporten. He is known having 3 children.

On 10 March 1983, the Beulah Beacon of Beulah, North Dakota, printed
the following article about an interview with RAY Eisenbeis ( Raymond
Erhardt Eisenbeis) .
Why Steal Cemetery Toilet? Beulah Chairman Wonders of Theft
by Tim Kjos
Now, who would want to steal an outhouse? Mercer County has had more
than its share of crime the last few years that has included items more
worthy of stealing than a cemetery toilet of littlemonetary value.
Perhaps, it was a crime of passion resulting from a childhood obsession
to sit in a cold commode reading a Sears catalog.
Or maybe it was a non-farm resident who lacks sanitary facilities and
desired a low cost septic tank. Whatever the foolish reason may be, the
Peace Cemetery Association has lost its woodenfacility that had been a
landmark since constructed many years ago as a government project,
according to Ray Eisenbeis, association chairman, Beulah.
"It was in good, fair shape," remarked a serious Eisenbeis when first
asked about the unusual theft. Later, Eisenbeis loosened and laughed
that someone would actually steal the "whiteone-seater". The cemetery
is located 16 miles northwest of Beulah. It belonged to Peace Lutheran
Church of Beulah which was dissolved in 1968. Although Peace Lutheran
members have joinedother churches, the cemetery is maintained for
periodic visitation. Eisenbeis says during those visits persons still
used the outhouse. But they can't any longer. About three weeks
ago,Eisenbeis drove past the cemetery and noticed the toilet was
missing. He stopped at a nearby farm and inquired if they'd seen it, or
noticed when it disappeared. Eisenbeis had little success. That week he
placed a newspaper advertisement seeking any information, but there was
no response. Eisenbeis placed another ad this week.
Eisenbeis is disturbed that someone would actually steal a toilet.
"It's not a joke. Sure, you can laugh about it, but I'm serious.
Otherwise, I wouldn't have put it (ad) in the newspaper,"stated
Eisenbeis. The outhouse was bolted to a concrete base. He says the
bolts were cut before it was lifted off the concrete. Since the
structure was heavy, Eisenbeis speculates it requiredtwo or three guys
to lift it onto a truck or flatbed. There was no damage to the cemetery
itself. Eisenbeis figures the outhouse can be used for any number of
things, in addition to itstraditional purpose. Perhaps, the thief or
thieves are using it as a smokehouse or fish house. "Maybe the guy who
stole it is using it to smoke some meat he stole," added Eisenbeis.
Eisenbeisis paying for the ad costs out of his pocket. He argues the
issue's principal is that no one should be allowed to take something
that isn't theirs. "If he can get away without beingpenalized, it gives
me an idea to go out and steal something," he said. Of course,
Eisenbeis never thought someone would steal an outhouse. "Well they'll
steal anything, usually somethingyou'd never expect," he added.
Eisenbeis believes it is his duty to find out what happened to the
cemetery's property and he won't give up the search. If he finds the
missing outhouse,Eisenbeis pledged to sign a complaint and have the
guilty party arrested. In the meantime, the cemetery is without a
facility. Eisenbeis said the association will either have to replace
thetoilet, or plant bushes. "We'll have to do something," he explained.
