Back Epic of Charles Eisenbeis 1832-1902

Legends about Manresa Castle include two ghosts who have taken up residence. One is that of a priest who hung himself in the left tower after committing a cardinal sin and then making his peace with God. The second is the ghost of a young woman who leaped to her death from a third storey window after her lover failed to meet her. While odd things have occurred, such as doors opening or closing, or lights turning on and off, the stories of these two ghosts are false, made up to amuse tourists by a bartender who once worked at the castle.

The castle is located in Port Townsend, Washington and it was finished in 1892 as the home for the Eisenbeis family.  Their family name means ‘iron-biter’ which is freaking awesome.  Charles Eisenbeis was the first mayor of Port Townsend and he fashioned the castle after similar architecture on the Rhine river from his homeland in Prussia.  He christened it Castle Eisenbeis.  It is a sexy beast of a castle.  No really, look:

The Eisenbeis family suffered tragedy in 1897 when Charles Eisebeis Jr took his own life.  Charles Sr followed five years later, succumbing to Bright’s disease.  Eventually Charles’ widow moved away from the castle and remarried.  The castle stood vacant until 1927 when it was sold to the Jesuit priests and they renamed it Manresa Hall.  It served as their training school until the late 60s and from thereafter it has served as a hotel which has gained quite a reputation for being haunted.

One of the ghosts is said to be a Jesuit-in-training who committed suicide in the attic.  Guests staying on the third-floor have reported the sound of rope stretching and wood groaning with weight.  Guests in room 302, directly under where he is said to have hanged himself often hear footsteps above them though the attic is off-limits.  One guest stated that he woke up to see a hooded man standing at the end of his bed.

The most haunted room is said to be 306.  This room was where a guest of the Eisenbeis’ stayed.  Her name was Katie and she was waiting for her fiancé to return from a merchant ship.  When Katie received news her fiancé’s ship had sunk, she threw herself from the window of room 306.  And then, as these stories go, her fiancé returned to Port Townsend, as he had been rescued by a passing ship, only to find that she had killed herself upon hearing about his supposed death.

Katie haunts the room by pulling on bedclothes and making lights flicker and the television turns on and off.  Items are moved while guests are out of the room..  Her ghostly crying is occasionally reported.  Or you could try what a team of paranormal investigators did and insult and challenge her (which I don’t condone because don’t be an asshole) which resulted in pissing her off.

First she made the room smell of rotting meat.  The investigators claimed that when they continued insulting her, she made the temperature of the room go ice cold and then very hot.  One investigator claims he saw her apparition in a window as well.  She continued all night, walking over the investigators as the lay in the bed and tugging the bedclothes, ensuring none of them got a good night’s sleep.  So don’t piss her off.  The spirit of Kate is so notorious that apparently the guest book in room 306 is filled with notes from guests who experienced her antics.

If you are interested in staying at Manresa castle, their website is here.  And here is a page with photos taken by a couple undertaking a haunted honeymoon.  There are photos of inside the building as well as almost 60 photos taken of the ghostly stories in the guest-books which are well worth a read SOURCE Part 8 of ? of Lara tells Ghost Stories
